To promote visits, the town is offering museum-goers a chance to win a prize for stopping by any of the facilities and getting a passport stamped. The tour will be held during Stratford's Museum Month, which aims to highlight the town's 10 museums. The museum itself is located in a more than 200-year-old building on East Broadway. The group will also stop at the David Judson House, which serves as the home of the Stratford Historical Society, and the Ruby & Fletcher African American Museum to learn about the history of African Americans during the town's colonial period, Casazza said. The tavern, which was originally located near Monument Place, was built by Ezekiel Lovejoy, a businessman who operated a stage coach service between New Haven and New York City. “We'll go inside and see the colonial features that still remain in the house.”Īt some point, the tour group will visit the site of Lovejoy’s Tavern, a since-destroyed restaurant and inn where John Adams once spent a night, according to a letter the famed Massachusetts lawyer and politician sent to his wife Abigail. “The owners are graciously allowing us to bring our group in for a brief visit,” Casazza said. Tour-goers will also get a rare look inside a privately owned home on East Broadway. “There's a lot of really interesting connections in Stratford to very prestigious and famous people in our history,” Casazza said.Ĭasazza said the tour will largely highlight the buildings’ architectural features and the history of its residents. Other homes that will be featured along the tour include the Johnson House, a Main Street residence built by the son of Constitutional Convention delegate William Samuel Johnson, and the General Joseph Walker House, an Elm Street saltbox that was once owned by former Connecticut Gov. The home was originally built in the late 17th century before being transformed in 1740 into a saltbox house - a popular style of homes at that time, characterized by a slanted rear roof.
The afternoon excursion will begin at the Perry House, one of the town’s oldest structures. “Usually we do bus tours, but this is one that lends itself to walking so we’re really excited about that.”
“Stratford has so many well preserved buildings in a very close space,” said Georgette Blau, the nonprofit’s founder.
